Device Requirements

The platform automatically enforces minimum device requirements for all studies. These requirements ensure that participants can complete behavioral tasks reliably and that recordings are captured properly.

Required Capabilities

Every participation must meet these three requirements:

1. Camera Support

The browser must support media device access (getUserMedia API). This is needed for video-recorded sessions. All modern desktop and laptop browsers support camera access, but the participant must grant permission when prompted.

2. Microphone Support

The browser must support media device access (getUserMedia API). This is needed for audio recording during sessions. As with camera support, the participant must grant permission when prompted by their browser.

3. Minimum Viewport Width of 768 Pixels

The browser window must be at least 768 pixels wide. This requirement excludes most phones and very small tablets. Behavioral tasks display timed visual stimuli that require adequate screen space for reliable presentation and response capture.

What Happens When Requirements Are Not Met

Participants who do not meet the minimum requirements will see a message explaining which requirement failed. They cannot proceed with the participation until the issue is resolved (for example, by switching to a larger screen or granting camera/microphone permissions).

Preview Mode Exception

Preview mode bypasses the device check, allowing researchers to test their studies on any device. This is useful for reviewing study content and task flow without needing to meet the full requirements.

Recording Device Information

The quality summary for each participation records the device check results, including:

  • Screen dimensions (width and height in pixels)
  • Detected capabilities (camera and microphone support)
  • Whether the device check passed

This information helps researchers understand the technical context for each session and identify any potential issues related to device limitations.

For the best experience, participants should use:

  • Chrome (desktop or laptop)
  • Firefox (desktop or laptop)
  • Edge (desktop or laptop)
  • Safari (desktop or laptop)

Mobile browsers are not recommended due to the viewport width requirement and the complexity of behavioral tasks that require precise timing and visual presentation.
